2012 TOP FIVE PESTS
Nader's Pest Raiders Predicts another Banner Year for Ants,
Cockroaches, Termites, Mosquitoes and Fleas
Pests have long been a threat to the quality of life we all
enjoy due to their ability to transmit disease and cause
significant damage to property and this year expects to be no
different. Nader's Pest Raiders has prepared the following
list of the top 5 pests likely to cause homeowners the most concern
in 2012:
1. Ants: There are more than 700
different species of ants in the United States and this number
actually grows each year at a rapid rate as new species are
imported through travel and international commerce. Recent
discoveries include the hairy (or Caribbean) crazy
ant which continues to make its way northward and the
odorous house ant. With so many types of ants to
combat, it's important for homeowners to remember that each species
must be treated uniquely. If ants are spotted in the home, a pest
professional should be contacted immediately to prevent an
infestation.
2. Cockroaches:
Cockroaches carry up to 33 different kinds of bacteria and research
has shown they can even trigger asthma attacks in children.
Cockroaches also reproduce very quickly with the female able to lay
up to 50 eggs at one time. So if an infestation is suspected,
a pest professional should be contacted immediately.
3. Termites: It's not
about if you will get termites in your home, but when, especially
living in the South. Termites are voracious eaters, active
year round and cause more than $5 billion in property damage each
year - more than storms and fires combined - and the damage is most
often not covered by homeowner's insurance. Homeowners should
ensure they have a 24/7/365 termite protection plan for their home
to safeguard their investment and have their property inspected
annually by a licensed professional.
4. Mosquitoes:
Mosquitoes are a constant battle in the South from March through
October. While they are most known for the red, itchy welts
they leave behind on their victims, they can also transmit diseases
such as West Nile Virus and Encephalitis. Only needing very
small amounts of stagnant water to breed, Mosquitoes only take 7-10
days to develop from egg to adult. Homeowners can make small
changes to their yard to help reduce the Mosquito population
including removing all sources of standing water and cutting back
unnecessary vegetation around the home.
5. Fleas: Flea populations are booming in
households across the U.S. and not just in homes with pets. Fleas,
a lot like bed bugs, have become increasingly resistant to common
treatment methods allowing the breeding cycle to continue. Always
on the lookout for a warm-blooded host to attack, family pets and
humans are the perfect candidates. To keep help reduce the chances
of fleas infesting the home, vacuum often and bathe furry friends
frequently.
