Bed Bug Control
Florida Bed Bug Control & Extermination
It's almost impossible these days to turn on the news and not
hear of another outbreak of bed bug activity. These pesky
bugs are being reported nationwide and outbreaks are occurring in
hotels, hospitals, movie theaters, airplanes and even department
stores.
Bed bugs are hardy little pests. They can live for a year
or more without eating and can withstand a wide range of
temperatures. Bed bugs are also very elusive, hitching a ride
on clothing, luggage, backpacks or shoes which can make them spread
rapidly from room to room.
The Health Risks Associated with Bed Bugs
Unless a person has an allergic reaction to a bed bug bite, the
physical health effects consist of "itchy and "annoying" unsightly
red welts. These can be treated with an oral antibiotic or
hydrocortisone cream. While there is no evidence that bed bugs
spread any diseases, there can be lasting emotional and
psychological effects from an infestation.
How to Identify a Bed Bug Infestation
- Bed bugs are very hard to see, especially because they
most often come out at night. Bed bugs are oval-shaped, brown
bugs about the size of an apple seed.
- Look for small reddish brown spots on bed linens,
indicating droppings and blood spots.
- Red, itchy welts on your skin (a red dot with a lighter
red ring around it) are the most obvious sign that you have been
bitten by a bed bug.
- You may find eggs or molted skin on bed linens or the
mattress.
Identifying a Bed Bug Problem
- Red, itchy welts on your skin (a red dot with a lighter red
ring around it) are the most obvious sign that you have been bitten
by a bed bug.
- Look for small reddish brown dots (droppings and blood spots)
on bed linens.
- You may find eggs or molted skin on bed linens or the
mattress.
- Bed bugs themselves are often hard to spot, since they
typically come out at night. Look for a small reddish brown
oval-shaped bug about the size of an apple seed.
- In severe cases with heavy infestation, a sweet smelling
"buggy" odor may be noticeable.
Tips to Help Avoid Bed Bugs
- Thoroughly examine your hotel room before unpacking. Look
around the mattress, under sheets and behind the headboard for any
signs of bed bugs.
- To prevent bed bugs from returning home with you, place your
luggage on the dresser up off the floor.
- Check your luggage when you return home to make sure you didn't
bring any bed bugs home with you. Wash all your clothes in
hot water. As a precaution, you can even vacuum out
your luggage.
- Check the backs and seams of movie theater seats and airline
seats before settling in. Keep backpacks and purses off the
floor and when flying use the overhead compartment for your luggage
whenever possible.
- When not in use, keep brief cases, computers and suitcases
closed.
- Report any signs of bed bugs immediately.
