What Do Booklice Look Like?

At just 3/16 of an inch, booklice look like miniature termites with back legs that are larger than their front legs. They are unable to jump, and usually appear brownish in color, but can also be shades of gray or white.

What Do Booklice Eat?

Molds, fungi, grains, and other starchy materials make up booklice’s diet. If booklice are found within grains or cereal, it’s likely because the food was stored in moldy conditions. Due to their need for mold, they are found in areas with higher moisture levels, including basements, attics, and storage areas. Sometimes, booklice will feed on paper or cloth products, but they don’t usually cause serious damage.

Are Booklice Harmful?

Booklice don’t bite humans or pets because they aren’t true lice. This also means they don’t spread diseases. They are rarely harmful within your home, but large infestations have the potential to contaminate food storage.

How to Get Rid of Booklice

Eliminating areas of high humidity in your home will prevent mold and fungi from growing, so booklice won’t have a food source. Dry these areas by opening windows or using fans and dehumidifiers. This will kill off any booklice in a matter of days or weeks. Sealing up entryways can help, but due to their extremely small size, booklice can often find a new entry point.
