Carpenter Bees. Same Problem, Different Year

Cindy Mannes

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. That’s all you hear when you know something is up outside, then you remember its summer time and the carpenter bees are out again. Southern states are most prone to carpenter bees invading homes and destroying what you worked so hard to build. Decks, porches, foundations, and more are all at risk when your house becomes the hotel for these bees. Take our advice to watch out for and avoid hosting these annoying and destructive pests.

Watch out for Carpenter Bees!

If you haven’t seen them this year or don’t know what you are really looking for, here is a quick description. Carpenter bees resemble bumble bees, but the carpenter bee has a black abdomen. Luckily for us, the male carpenters do not have stingers. But don’t try to catch them because if you mistake a female for a male, you’ll likely get stung.

The stingers of the females are not the worrisome part of the carpenter bees, as they do live up to their name and will destroy your carpentry. Carpenter bees are attracted to softer woods because it’s easier for them to carve into and lay their eggs. This also weakens the wood in your home and could potentially cause serious problems to your house.

Protect your house and all that surround it from carpenter bees and other pests. Periodically looking for pests around the house could save your home and definitely save you some money.
