Fall Weather Brings Unwanted Pests

How to ensure your home is protected from unwanted guests

Fall is here and a variety of squirrels, rodents and other wildlife are looking for warm places to make their homes. Where better than in your attic?

Rats, squirrels, raccoons and even bats may be affectionately referred to as critters, but they are unwelcome guests in any home.  These fall invaders create costly home repairs for homeowners. So, how are they getting in?

Most animal pests only need a tiny space to find their way into your home and often gain access through the areas where utilities and pipes enter your home.  The aluminum soffit under your roof, your chimney and even trees touching your home can also provide access to unwanted wildlife.

So, now that you know how they are getting in – how can you keep them out? Here are a few recommendations to help keep your home free of squirrels, rats and other wildlife this fall:

  • Cut back tree branches at least 6-8 feet from your home
  • Ensure all openings around utility lines and pipes entering your home are well-sealed
  • Make sure all attic vents are secured
  • Install a cap in your chimney
  • Frequently survey the outside of your home for possible entry points
