Pest Problems Unveiled When Buying a New Home

Kimberly Beaudin

You are beyond excited to buy a new house! You’re looking online and driving around with a realtor. You find a couple you like and then wham! You step inside the house of your dreams, and you can afford it. That’s it, the search is over, and it’s time to sign the papers. A couple months later you’re moving your belongings in, and to your surprise the house is infested with rodents and insects. Now you can’t even enjoy being in the new home due to your little house guests. It’s imperative for prospective homeowners to get a pest inspection when purchasing a new house.

All homes, new and old, should be checked before papers are signed. Foreclosed homes need special attention because they could have possibly been empty for a long period. Empty homes are perfect for rodents and pests to live in. Professional pest inspections can tell you about all of the pest infestations from past to present.

Professional Pest Inspections

The inspection will look for structural damage as well as signs of any pest infestations. In the south, you have to worry about two pests in particular: termites and rodents. Termites are a leading cause of home destruction (financial and structural), and cause about $5 billion a year in damages. Damages caused by termites is rarely covered by homeowners’ insurance. They can be in a home for years before found, eating away the foundation, inside out.

Rodents such as mice, rats, and raccoons can also be a big problem for your new house. They can cause structural damage by chewing through wires, which can potentially cause fires. They are also a risk for people in the home, creating allergies through their urine and bringing in pests such as fleas, mites, ticks, and lice.

So when looking for a new home, remember to take a step back and get a pest inspection from a professional. Have a happy home buying experience to all the prospective homeowners!
